In 2024, One Ocean Foundation has chosen to finance and activate a project for the protection and conservation of the dune ecosystem at Capriccioli Beach. The project aims to enhance one of the most frequented and beloved coastal areas in our country, as well as to combat shoreline erosion.
The project includes the construction of lightweight structures to protect the marine dunes, with particular attention to their portion most exposed to erosive phenomena. The structures are made from natural materials, such as wood or plant fibers, and have minimal visual impact, in addition to being
fully recyclable.
As part of One Ocean Foundation's commitment to environmental awareness and education, the protective structures are accompanied by informational panel designed to increase awareness about the importance of dune ecosystems. This is supplemented by awareness activities and the realization of tailored educational materials for local schools, beachgoers, and the community.
Despite their strategic role in mitigating erosion risks and the challenges posed by climate change to Mediterranean areas, dunes are one of the most vulnerable and threatened ecosystems in our territory. Coastal dunes are becoming increasingly rare, and Sardinia, in particular, has lost over 60%
of them.
Therefore, the focus of One Ocean Foundation's activities is on a specific operational area, namely the spaces of Capriccioli Beach where the dune ridges and their associated Mediterranean scrub formations are located.
