Offshore coral nursery spawned for the first time

After four years from the transplanting, coral colonies of genus Acropora have spawned for the first time at Fitzroy Island nursery, on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Coral spawning is an annual and unique event where multiple species of corals synchronously release sperm and eggs into the water to reproduce.

Acropora spp. corals have survived mass bleaching events and are likely to be the most resilient species of super corals that hopefully will survive future marine heatwaves.
