Since 2024, One Ocean Foundation has been working in a project to protect and restore Mediterranean dune ecosystems, with the aim of enhancing one of the country’s most frequented coastal areas and preserving its biodiversity.
The initiative includes the installation of lightweight structures made of natural, recyclable materials (such as wood and plant fibers), with minimal visual impact, designed to safeguard the dunes most exposed to the anthropic pressure and erosion. In parallel, the project fosters environmental awareness through educational panels, outreach activities, and tailored materials for schools, local communities, and beachgoers, highlighting the importance of dune ecosystems.
GOALS
Protection
Safeguard the most vulnerable coastal areas from erosion and human impacts through lightweight structures made of natural, recyclable materials.
Restoration
Support the recovery and resilience of Mediterranean dune ecosystems, enhancing local biodiversity.
Awareness
Develop educational materials and outreach activities to raise awareness among schools, local communities, and beachgoers about the value of dune ecosystems.

The importance of preserving dune ecosystems
Despite their strategic role in mitigating erosion risks and the challenges posed by climate change to Mediterranean areas, dunes are one of the most vulnerable and threatened ecosystems in our territory. Coastal dunes are becoming increasingly rare, and Sardinia, in particular, has lost over 60% of them.
Therefore, the focus of One Ocean Foundation's activities is on a specific operational area, namely the spaces of Capriccioli Beach where the dune ridges and their associated Mediterranean scrub formations are located.
